In September 1957 the construction of a multi-span high-level highway bridge in Melbourne, Australia (Fig. 10.1), named the Kings Bridge started. The bridge crosses over the Yarra River as well as over a railway and a couple of streets, in a north-southerly direction. Due to poor soil conditions it was decided upon using high-strength steel in order to keep the self-weight down of the I-girder Bridge (Fig. 10.2). In April 1961 – three and half years after the construction began – the bridge was taken into service. It was found that all four girders had fractured in a brittle manner in the position of the cover plate ends (Fig. 10.6 and 10.7).
